Marcel Joray hat sich in der Schweiz durch sein Engagement für die Kunst besonders hervorgetan. 1954 organisiert er in Biel die erste Freiluft-Ausstellung für Skulptur und 1957 in Neuchâtel die erste Ausstellung abstrakter Malerei. 1944 gründet er den Verlag Editions du Griffon, in dem er eine Buchreihe zum Schaffen zeitgenössischer Künstler herausgibt. 1961 erscheint eine wichtige Monografie zum Schaffen von Barbara Hepworth. Als Dank hierfür schenkt ihm die britische Künstlerin eine Skulptur, die nun in dieser Auktion angeboten wird.
Marcel Joray a beaucoup fait pour la promotion de l’art en Suisse. En 1954, il organise à Bienne la première exposition suisse de sculpture en plein air et en 1957, à Neuchâtel, la première exposition suisse de peinture abstraite. Il fonde en 1944 les Editions du Griffon et édite une série de livres d’art dédiée aux artistes contemporains. En 1961 paraît une importante monographie consacrée à Barbara Hepworth. Pour le remercier de son travail, l’artiste britannique lui offre la sculpture proposée aujourd’hui à la vente.
Marcel Joray distinguished himself in Switzerland through his commitment to art. In 1954 he organised the first open-air exhibition of sculpture in Biel and in 1957 the first exhibition of abstract painting in Neuchâtel. In 1944 he founded the publishing house Editions du Griffon, through which he published a series of books on the work of contemporary artists. In 1961 an important monograph on the work of Barbara Hepworth is published. To thank him, the British artist gave Marcel Joray a sculpture, which is now offered in this sale.
